Professional–Plays Most days–Used More than 10 reedmakers–Reedmaking: Professional reedmaker
There seems to be some misinformation in former posts. I am a professional both in reedmaking and playing. I cannot keep up with such a large studio of reeds as well as my own gigging. I recently ordered from Advantage. They sell a large variety of brands of oboe reeds of varying qualities. I am VERY pleased with the Emerald Reeds, both student level and the artist level. With a little adjusting from me, they are GREAT for the majority of my students grades 5-12. I have also ordered the “Graham” Etude reeds. I am so far not impressed by these and won’t be ordering them again, but overall have no problems with the Advantage products. Pick what works for you by experimenting.
To the last two posters: According to my paperwork the company is called “Advantage USA”. They happen to sell a brand of reed called “Chartier”. Who cares who the maker and what reason he/she has. Whatever bone is to be picked…this is not the place. This is for feedback and a resource for double reeds everywhere. Happy reeding.

Advantage is NOT owned by Chartier in Albuquerque. Whoever is claiming this is MISINFORMED and seems to have some sort of grudge and wants to belittle others. Just guessing that it might be a recent “Anonymous” Aug 11th commenter who is probably touting his own reeds but seems to have trouble remembering to pay his bills (and is now cut off from a supply source). This comment is just so folks will consider the “Anonymous” source before taking everything published in this forum as gospel. Does slander ring a bell? PS: it is situations like this that show a need for an identity requirement for comments (especially for those who want to publish falsehoods)

Professional–Used 6-10 reedmakers–Plays most days–Usually makes own reeds
These reeds are made by Chartier in Albuquerque, who owns the Advantage site as his retail outlet. His reeds are sold under many names, but are all only suitable for beginners i.e. the first week of playing. Machine made from cheap materials, they will give you the duck-like sound the oboe is stereotyped as having. Don’t buy them.

I used these reeds as a beginner but now they are not as strong. the tone isn’t as good as other makes but they were good to use starting off.

I have been purchasing these reeds for my daughter for quite awhile now. They have an excellent return policy, but we have been having problems over the last several months with the reeds leaking air. We have even had her private lesson instructor check the reeds before returning them. I am now looking for a more reliable reed.
